Habitat for Humanity
Project:
Habitat for Humanity makes it their main focus to build simple, decent, affordable housing seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the World. Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses around the World. Habitat chose to house their International office in Atlanta in 2006.
Challenges:
Accommodating the need to maintain the look of a worldwide, grass-roots, non-profit organization in a 27 story high-rise building located in the center of a metropolitan city. Habitat was moving a portion of their staff to Atlana from Americus, GA, a small city located in the southern part of the state. The look and feel of their previous facility was very welcoming and warm with rocking chairs in the lobby and house facades flanking the walls. It was important to the executive staff to maintain that same warm feeling in Atlanta along with portraying the message that Habitat for Humanity is indeed a Worldwide Organization.
Solution:
The design of the lobby area for Habitat for Humanity was based around the idea of using several different materials and textures. The bamboo flooring and large exposed brick columns found in the entry not only help to incorporate the image of a worldwide organization, but also provide a warm entry with the soft color combinations and varying textures. With the use of flat screen televisions and an arrangement of metal stand-offs placed randomly throughout the space, we were able to create several feature areas for the vast photographic images that have been taken throughout the years of builds they have accomplished to be displayed in a flexible manor and relay their story.
